Seagate and AMD demonstrated a complete implementation of 6 Gb SATA in New Orleans today. The read speeds that Seagate has achieved, and was demonstrated at the show, are about 550 megabytes per second including command overhead. By comparison, SATA 1.5 achieved 120Mbps, and SATA 3 achieved 250Mbps. The demonstration uses an AMD reference motherboard, with an AMD SATA 6Gbps chipset and CPU, and a prototype 6Gbps drive.

Seagate has said in its blogpost that a 3 Gb/sec SATA is standard today and 6 Gb/sec SATA will get here just in time for hardcore PC users and gamers. 6 Gb/sec interfaces will ship on products in late 2009, none too soon for industry needs.

According to the blogpost, storage device throughputs (disk drives and SSD) are approaching the 3 Gb/sec SATA speed limit. For disk drives, it’s important for the external interface to be faster than the storage device. Otherwise, drives start to skip revolutions when reading and writing data. Skipped revolutions are like a sputtering car engine: they slow things down even further.

Interface speeds aren’t keeping up with capacity. It’s taking longer and longer to fill and empty a SATA drive. Anything that can be done to speed up the flow is valuable. The drive is the bottleneck, as it should be. Still, the interface speed has to be there as well.

Marc Noblitt, senior marketing I/O development manager for Seagate said “Currently, SATA uses a 3.0-Gbit/s interface, which should satisfy the throughput requirements of hard drives until 2011, when that channel will become saturated and the 6.0-Gbit/s interface will truly be needed. But the SATA-IO Working Group and the industry has traditionally built in enough overhead into the interface to allow the industry time to prepare.”

He said, the 6.0-Gbit/s also contains improved streaming characteristics that 3.0-Gbit/s drives with Native Command Queuing lacked, Noblitt said. In addition, a new power management spec allows the always-on SATA interface to power on and off, like older Parallel ATA drives. Marc Norblitt said further “We need to make the interface faster, so the interface doesn’t become a bottleneck that causes performance to suffer dramatically.”

“SATA is a storage interface; USB is a universal interface,” Norblitt says simply. The two interfaces, he adds, will be able to co-exist, when asked about it.

It’s said to be the first drive with such a facility. It also boasts AES hardware encryption and password protection to keep “critical business files safe.”

SanDisk said in a release that its the first USB flash drive with a backup button. No wires. No fuss. Just an easier way to protect your favorite photos, videos and songs.
So you’ll always have them with you.

It’s really easy to just put it in your pocket and protect your files wherever you are. If we talk about security it’s secured too. It would protect your data with password protection and AES hardware encryption. It’s backed by the minds behind flash memory with company’s with our patent pending backup technology and a five-year limited warranty.
It would support Intel Pentium PC or Macintosh computer with USB support in Windows XP, Vista (Backup and Storage) and Windows 2000, Mac OS X v10.1.2+ and Linux (Storage only). USB 2.0 port would be required for high-speed transfer at the same time it would require high-power USB hub port.

The UltraDrive ME sports to deliver the fastest available 2.5-inch internal storage solution. It is developed for SATA-II notebooks and it provides a sequential read/write speeds up to 200/160 MB per second. The UltraDrive LE has read/write speeds of 230/170 MB per second and supports very high transaction speeds (IOPS). It also utilizes less power and generates less heat while outperforming 10,000 RPM hard drives.

According to Super Talent Chief Operating Officer, C.H. Lee. “The UltraDrive LE represents a quantum leap forward in storage performance that is simply staggering. It excels in sequential and random read and writes speeds, transaction rates and access and seek times. It has an advantage over 10,000 RPM hard drives in power consumption and MTBF. This product sets a new standard in enterprise storage.”

The new line of solid state drives from Super Talent comes in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256 GB storage capacities. The line is based on the SLC NAND Flash. Both the UltraDrive LE and ME SSDs will be available in January 2009. However there is no word on pricing.
